The future of digital marketing: 10 shifts defining 2026-2030

The future of digital marketing is being decided on five fronts: being found by AI assistants, being chosen, being bought through their agents, serving customers well and measuring it all with your own data. This guide sets out the ten shifts that will define 2026-2030, separates what is already live in Spain from what only exists elsewhere, and puts a date on every figure.

The 10 shifts in digital marketing at a glance

The future of digital marketing does not hinge on one technology but on ten shifts moving at different speeds. Some are already routine in Spain, some are in pilot and some exist only in the United States. We tag each one Now, Next or Later so you can see where to invest first.

Last reviewed: 1 October 2026. Several facts in this guide change every few months, especially those on AI advertising and agent-led commerce, so each one carries its date and its source.

  • 1. Discovery inside AI answers (Now). Your customers research and compare inside Google's AI features and the assistants before they visit a website.
  • 2. Advertising inside the assistants (Now, early stage). ChatGPT already shows ads in Spain; Google's AI Mode formats sit under Later, with no EU date.
  • 3. AI agents that buy (Next). The protocols exist and pilots have moved real money; delegated payment at scale sits under Later.
  • 4. Conversational service with a person on hand (Now). Agents that complete tasks, identify themselves as AI and leave a route to a human.
  • 5. Cheap creative, valuable brand (Now). Production costs fall; judgement and brand consistency become the scarce goods.
  • 6. Helpful personalisation (Now). Helping people decide works better than following them around.
  • 7. First-party data and consent (Now). Without reliable, consented data, no AI performs.
  • 8. Measurement rebuilt (Next). Mix models, incrementality tests and AI visibility metrics complement attribution.
  • 9. Commerce, streaming and creators (Now). These are among the most dynamic lines in Spain's digital market.
  • 10. A new agency model (Next). Pay for outputs, lean AI-supported teams and senior strategy on demand.

1. Discovery moves into AI answers

The first shift has already happened: a growing share of pre-purchase research ends in an AI-generated answer rather than a list of links. In Spain, Google's AI Overviews have been live since 25 March 2025, in Spanish and English, and AI Mode has been available in Spanish since October 2025.

Adoption is high. According to Eurostat (2025 data, published in December 2025), 37.9% of people aged 16 to 74 in Spain had used generative AI in the previous three months, against an EU average of 32.7%. A separate survey by Bain & Company (April 2026) puts the share of Spanish consumers who say they use generative AI at around 80%, with 22% saying they have replaced search engines with it most of the time. The two studies use different definitions and should not be added together or compared.

None of this means search is disappearing. According to StatCounter (September 2026), Google holds a 93.81% share of the search engine market in Spain, and Alphabet said in its second-quarter 2026 results that AI features are driving growth in queries. What changes is where the answer is read: a Pew Research Center study (July 2025, based on a US panel) found that users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one. Google disputed the methodology.

The practical consequence is that ranking is no longer enough: you need to be the source the model cites. Google's guide to AI search, updated in July 2026, makes clear that there are no special technical requirements beyond SEO best practice, and names non-commodity content (original, expert and first-hand) as the most influential long-term factor. That is the work of our GEO service. We explain the discipline in what generative engine optimisation is and the practical steps in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.

The point to remember: nobody can guarantee a mention in ChatGPT, Gemini or AI Mode. What you can do is improve your brand's eligibility, clarity and authority, and measure the result.

2. Advertising enters the AI assistants

Advertising inside AI assistants already exists in Spain, although as of October 2026 it is confirmed in one channel only. Since 24 August 2026, ChatGPT has shown ads in Spain on its Free and Go plans; in the European Economic Area they are contextual rather than personalised, and the self-serve Ads Manager opened in beta to eligible advertisers in Europe on 31 August 2026.

Those ads are not shown next to conversations about health or politics, or to users identified as under 18, so the channel does not suit every sector equally.

The money is heading that way. WPP Media estimated in June 2026 that generative search advertising revenue would reach about $5.1 billion in 2026, and forecasts that it will pass $100 billion by 2030. That is a forecast, not a fact, but it explains why the platforms are moving quickly.

For a brand, the sensible order is to get well-measured search campaigns in place first and then test ChatGPT in a contained way, where the product fits. We set out the detail in our guide to ChatGPT ads in Spain and run it through our AI advertising service.

The rest of the map deserves a careful reading, because this is where most unfounded promises circulate. As of October 2026, this is the position for an advertiser in Spain:

  • Google AI Overviews: ads can appear above or below the overview in Spain. Inside the overview they run in twelve countries, in English only; neither Spain nor the EU is among them.
  • Google AI Mode: ad formats are being tested in the United States, with no date announced for the EU.
  • Perplexity: it was winding down its ads programme, the Financial Times reported in February 2026. It is a target for organic visibility, not a paid channel.
  • Gemini (app) and Claude: neither carries ads. Anthropic pledged in February 2026 to keep Claude ad-free.
  • Microsoft Copilot: placements are served through Microsoft Advertising campaigns, and availability varies by market.

3 and 4. Agents that buy and agents that serve

AI agents are starting to act on people's behalf at two moments: when they buy and when they ask for help. In buying, the influence on the decision is already real while delegated payment remains in pilot. In service, customers already turn to AI on their own and expect a person to be available.

Shift 3: agents start buying. The protocols that make it possible now exist: UCP, announced by Google in January 2026 and live with retailers in the United States; ACP, backed by OpenAI; AP2; and MCP, which Anthropic donated in December 2025 to the Linux Foundation's Agentic AI Foundation. There have been steps back too: OpenAI retired Instant Checkout in ChatGPT, as reported in March 2026, and purchases are completed on the merchant's site.

Spain has already seen tests with real money. In July 2026, BBVA, CaixaBank, Bankinter and Abanca completed purchases with Visa that were initiated entirely by AI agents as part of a European pilot, El Español reported on 2 July 2026. These are pilots, not a general service. The sensible move today is to prepare the shop (complete product data, machine-readable prices and policies, an accessible checkout) through agent-ready commerce work. We cover the detail in what agentic commerce is.

Shift 4: conversational service with a person on hand. According to a Gartner survey published in July 2026, customers are around three times more likely to turn to a third-party generative AI tool, such as ChatGPT, than to a company's own chatbot to solve a service issue. A second Gartner survey, from August 2026, found that 87% believe companies using generative AI in customer service must provide access to a human agent.

The law points the same way. Since 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act has required people to be told when they are talking to an AI, unless it is obvious. And Spain's Law 10/2025 bars large companies and basic-service providers from using automated systems as their only customer service channel, with a deadline to adapt of 28 December 2026. A good AI agent completes tasks, identifies itself as AI and knows when to hand the conversation to a person, which is especially valuable in hospitality and tourism, where enquiries arrive in several languages at any hour. We go further in our guide to AI agents for lead generation.

The key idea: design for two readers. A person who wants a quick resolution, and an AI agent that needs clear data to recommend you or buy from you.

5 and 6. Cheaper creative, a more valuable brand

Producing a creative asset costs less every year, which is why it stops being an advantage. What sets a brand apart between 2026 and 2030 is judgement: a recognisable identity, ideas of its own, quality control and openness about when AI is involved. The same goes for personalisation: the winner is whoever helps, not whoever pursues.

Shift 5: the cost of production collapses. BCG calculated in September 2026 that a personalised product image that cost about $4 two years ago now costs about $0.04. If anyone can generate a thousand variants, the value lies in deciding which deserve to be published and in making them all look like the same brand. That is the job of an AI creative studio, and the subject of our guide to AI in advertising.

Audiences are also more demanding than the industry assumes. According to the US-based IAB (January 2026), 82% of advertising executives think Gen Z and Millennials feel positive about AI-generated ads, but only 45% of those consumers do. In Spain, 87% of social media users consider it essential to label AI-generated content, according to IAB Spain's 2026 social media study (May 2026).

The rules do not require everything to be labelled. For those who publish content, Article 50 requires deepfakes to be disclosed, along with AI-generated text on matters of public interest that has not been through human editorial review; machine-readable marking is a duty for the providers of generative AI systems. It does not reach every piece of marketing edited by people. Even so, the IAB's transparency framework (version 2, August 2026) recommends disclosure when AI affects authenticity, for example with synthetic people or voices, and our advice is to disclose whenever there is doubt.

Shift 6: helpful rather than intrusive personalisation. A Gartner survey (June 2025, 1,464 customers) concluded that personalised marketing creates negative experiences for 53% of customers, whereas personalisation that helps people make sense of their options makes a confident decision 2.3 times more likely. In practice: fewer messages, better guides and comparisons, and data gathered with consent.

7 and 8. First-party data and measurement rebuilt

Consented first-party data is the foundation of any serious use of AI in marketing, and measurement is being rebuilt on top of it. Click-by-click attribution becomes less reliable when part of the journey happens inside an assistant, so it is being complemented by mix models, experiments and AI visibility metrics.

Shift 7: first-party data and consent. Start with the myth: Chrome has not removed third-party cookies, and in October 2025 Google retired most of the Privacy Sandbox APIs. What erodes the signal is consent, the restrictions in Safari and Firefox, and journeys that leave no click. In Spain, the data protection authority's cookie guide (AEPD, May 2024) requires rejecting to be as easy as accepting, and the EU proposal of November 2025 to change those rules has not been adopted.

The answer is a foundation of first-party data and reliable tracking: well-managed consent, Consent Mode v2, server-side tagging and a clean CRM. Without that, automated bidding and AI models learn from incomplete data.

Shift 8: measurement is rebuilt. According to the IAB's State of Data 2026 report (early 2026, US market), up to 75% of marketers say attribution, incrementality tests and mix models fall short on rigour, timeliness, trust or efficiency. The IAB's own recommendation (guide of December 2025) is to triangulate: combine models, experiments and attribution rather than rely on a single method.

The tools have become more accessible. Google opened Meridian, its open-source mix model, to all advertisers in January 2025. And AI visibility now has official data: since 31 August 2026, Search Console has shown every site its impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode (without clicks or CTR), and Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot. A marketing measurement programme brings it all into a single reading; the method is set out in our guide to MMM and incrementality.

Rule of thumb: do not add up the conversions each platform reports. Each one counts with its own windows and models; you need a source of truth of your own.

9 and 10. Where spend is growing and how agencies change

In Spain, e-commerce, connected TV and creators are all growing at double-digit rates, and the way marketing is bought is changing at the same time: fewer billed hours and more defined outputs. Both shifts push towards small, specialised teams supported by AI.

Shift 9: commerce, streaming and creators. According to IAB Spain's digital media ad investment study (February 2026), digital ad investment in Spain reached €6,211.2 million in 2025, up 11.2%. Connected TV was the most dynamic segment, at more than €174 million (+48.4%), and influencer marketing reached €158 million (+25.9%). Spain's competition regulator, the CNMC, put e-commerce turnover for 2025 at €114.8 billion, up 20.6% (figure published in July 2026).

For a consumer brand or online shop, this comes down to three decisions: where you sell (your own shop and marketplaces), where you build the brand (streaming video and audio) and with whom (creators managed as a media channel, with advertising always identified).

Shift 10: the agency model resets. A WFA study of 69 multinationals (September 2026) shows that labour-based pay has fallen from 54% in 2011 to 19% in 2026, while fixed-fee and output-based models have risen from 20% to 33%. BCG describes (July 2026) teams of three to five people supported by AI agents in place of large campaign teams.

Spain has a well-known brake. According to Eurostat (2025 data, published in December 2025), only 6% of Spanish companies with ten or more employees apply AI to marketing or sales, and among those that considered AI without adopting it, 82.4% cite a lack of expertise. Hence the demand for senior strategy on demand, such as a fractional CMO within a digital strategy service, and for training in-house teams.

What will not happen (yet)

Knowing what is not changing matters as much as knowing what is. Several claims repeated in presentations and on social media are false or premature as of October 2026, and decisions built on them are expensive. These are the most common, with what we know about each.

  • 'Chrome is removing third-party cookies.' No: Google decided to keep them and retired most of the Privacy Sandbox APIs in October 2025.
  • 'An llms.txt file improves your Google rankings.' Google Search does not use it: it has no positive or negative effect. You can still publish one for other systems that may read it.
  • 'You can advertise inside AI Overviews in Spain.' No. In Spain ads appear above or below the overview; inside it, only in twelve countries and in English.
  • 'You can now buy without leaving ChatGPT.' OpenAI retired Instant Checkout, as reported in March 2026. ChatGPT is a place to discover; the purchase is completed on the merchant's site.
  • 'Cookie banners are going away.' The EU proposal known as the Digital Omnibus has not been adopted; the AEPD guide still applies.
  • 'Guaranteed top spot in ChatGPT.' No platform offers guaranteed positions in its answers.

The regulatory calendar, 2026-2028

European and Spanish regulation sets firm dates that affect marketing between 2026 and 2028. The two closest are transparency under the EU AI Act, applicable since 2 August 2026, and the adaptation of customer service to Spain's Law 10/2025 by 28 December 2026.

  • 28 June 2025 (in force): Spain's Law 11/2023 requires consumer e-commerce to be accessible; micro-enterprises providing services are exempt.
  • 2 August 2026 (in force): transparency obligations under Article 50 of the EU AI Act, such as telling people they are talking to an AI and disclosing deepfakes.
  • 27 September 2026 (now applicable): application date of Directive (EU) 2024/825, which rules out generic environmental claims such as 'eco' or 'green' without recognised substantiation. As of September 2026, Spain had not completed its transposition.
  • 2 December 2026: the grace period ends for machine-readable marking by generative AI systems that were already on the market.
  • 28 December 2026: deadline for large companies and basic-service providers to adapt to Law 10/2025 on customer service.
  • 2 December 2027 and 2 August 2028: obligations for high-risk AI systems (Annex III and Annex I, respectively).

Worth noting: at the time of this review, Spain's own AI law is still a bill going through parliament; the Council of Ministers approved it on 26 May 2026. In the meantime the reference is the EU AI Act, supervised in Spain by AESIA. This summary is for information and is not legal advice.

What to do in the next 90 days

In 90 days a company can lay the foundations without heavy investment by working in layers: being found, being chosen, being bought, serving customers and measuring it. This is the order we would follow, starting with what does not depend on any new platform.

  • Be found. Check that your key pages are indexed and that neither robots.txt nor your CDN blocks AI search crawlers, and review your AI Overviews and AI Mode impressions in Search Console.
  • Be chosen. Publish first-hand content that answers buying questions (how to choose, comparisons, timings, terms) and align your brand's name, description and details across all your profiles.
  • Be bought. Complete your product data, prices, stock, shipping and returns in machine-readable formats, and review the accessibility of your checkout.
  • Serve well. Identify your chatbot as AI, define when a conversation passes to a person and document the answers to frequent questions.
  • Measure it. Audit consent and tagging, define your own source of truth and plan a first incrementality test in the channel where you spend most.

Next step: if you would like to walk through this list with your own business, get in touch and we will turn it into a plan with priorities and owners.

Frequently asked questions

What is the future of digital marketing?

The future of digital marketing lies in being visible and trustworthy both to people and to the AI systems that help them decide. Between 2026 and 2030, AI-generated answers, agents that compare and buy, consented first-party data and experiment-based measurement all gain weight. Brand and human judgement still make the difference.

Will AI replace marketing teams?

It does not replace them, but it changes their shape. AI automates much of production and analysis, and consultancies such as BCG describe (July 2026) smaller teams supported by agents. Direction, judgement, review and accountability for what is published remain work for people.

Is SEO still worth investing in?

Yes. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core ranking systems and that SEO best practice remains the foundation for appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode. What changes is the goal: as well as ranking, you need to be a clear, citable source and to measure visibility inside the answers.

Can I already advertise on ChatGPT in Spain?

Yes. ChatGPT has shown ads in Spain since 24 August 2026, on the Free and Go plans, and the self-serve Ads Manager opened in beta for Europe on 31 August 2026. In the European Economic Area the ads are contextual, not personalised. It is a new channel, so start with contained tests and clear measurement.

Which marketing trends will define 2027?

Several come with a date. In February 2027, Google retires Dynamic Search Ads, which move to AI Max; on 2 December 2027, obligations for high-risk AI systems begin to apply. Meanwhile mix models and incrementality tests look set to spread, and it is worth watching whether AI Mode ads reach the EU, for which there is no date as of October 2026.

Where should a small business start?

With the foundations: reliable consent and tracking, original content that answers your customers' real questions, and consistent business details across every channel. Once that is in place, testing new channels makes sense. A lack of expertise is the barrier cited most by Spanish companies that considered AI without adopting it, according to Eurostat (2025 data), so training the team counts too.
